Why Isn’t Everything Gray?
Looking at the sunset last night, I began to wonder why we have so many beautiful colors in the rainbow. Why do we even have so many colors everywhere to enjoy? Why isn’t fruit and all of our food just one gray color? What difference would it make whether an apple was red or green or yellow? After all, it is just something to eat to keep us alive.
God could have made one food for all…gray, kind of like mana from heaven for the Israelites as they crossed the desert. And how about all those dozens of colors of fish? Divers tell us that in the deepest depths of the oceans where mankind has only been able to reach in recent years, there is a huge variety of fish and colors that most of us will never see. For thousands, if not millions of years those delights were hidden from us. Is it possible that God created those secret places for his own pleasure?
When we snorkeled in Hawaii to my astonishment and delight a huge turquoise fish swam directly toward my facemask, almost touching it, as if to say hello. Then he flipped his gorgeous turquoise and purple tail and playfully swam away. For years afterward, I have searched books and googled turquoise fish trying to find one like him to no avail. Why did meeting him mean so much to me?
Well, I took it personally because everyone who knows me knows that I love turquoise. Half of my house and clothes are based around that color. So, it seems to me almost as if God was letting me know that He knew I was there and sent a fish to greet me.
But I digress. Why are there so many different species of animals? Think about it. Why didn’t God just create one gray animal? But, no! Look how many unusual breeds of dogs there are; every kind imaginable from the little chihuahua to the huge Great Pyrenes. Each breed has it’s own personality and has an important job to do. Some naturally guard their masters or sheep, while some terriers love to run and chase. Others are born to hunt. Each species has a multitude of gorgeous colors. In addition, we all enjoy the different breeds of horses.
I think of the joy of seeing my neighbor’s flowers when we go for a walk, and even the roses in my own yard. But, why isn’t everything gray?
And why are there so many delicious different tastes? Spaghetti, and ice cream. Each culture inventing unique, irresistible, amazing dishes. Why are they all so different?
And why are each of us so unique? Our DNAs and fingerprints prove that each of us are an original. I can’t be anyone else because they are all taken!
Remember the song:
“I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom for me and you. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue, and clouds of white, the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky, are also on the faces of people passing by. I see friends shaking hands saying,” How do you do?” They’re really saying, “I love you.”
I hear babies cry and watch them grow. They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know, And I think to myself, what a wonderful world. (written by Bob Thiele and George D Weiss for Louis Armstrong)
I think I have figured out the answer to “why isn’t everything gray?” It’s all about God’s love for us, His children. He expresses His infinite creativity, His artistry, His glory, in our world for us to see. He desires that our roots will grow down into God’s love and keep us strong. “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (Ephesians 3:18)
And that’s not even to mention His creativity in the vast universe.
But that’s another story….
